The 2011-2012 School Year has officially ended ~ exams are over, good-byes were said and the buses pulled out for the last time for this school year.

So...what does the UC Community do...host a BBQ for our newest members ~ the Class of 2015!

Big Brothers and Sisters were on hand to welcome the Class of 2015 on a gorgeous sunny afternoon. Mrs. Abel fired up the grill and Mr. Luciano directed activities in between the DJs music ~ by the way there is no lack of dancing skills in this class!!

This is a bittersweet time for our incoming students. Some of them are leaving friends that they have been with for eight or nine years. But rest assured Class of 2015, new friends, new clubs, new sports and new activities await you here at Union Catholic ~ UC IS WHERE YOU WANT TO BE!!

Union Catholic Big Brothers and Sisters will be in touch by July 1st ~ feel free to ask them any questions you may have - they are here to help!

Some reminders:
Emerging Leader Applications have been mailed. Applications and letter of recommendations are due back by September 15th.

Summer Reading and Math Assignments are available on our website www.unioncatholic.org/community/parentessentials.php If you have any questions regarding your English Level, feel free to contact the admissions office.

Uniforms should be ordered by July 1st in order to be guaranteed for the start of school.

Physical Forms are due back to Union Catholic by September 1st.

As the school year ends and summer begins, it is time to officially Welcome the Class of 2015 at our "Welcome to UC" BBQ on June 15th.

This year's BBQ, hosted by Union Catholic Big Brothers and Sisters, will have Alum Anthony Antunez as the DJ and Mrs. Abel will be firing up the grill for our burgers and dogs - everyone loves Mrs. Abel's cooking!!

As I was in mass this past weekend, I couldn't help but smile at all the UC Hoodies that were in church. It was nice to see so many of our newly registered students already showing their Viking Pride!!

March is a busy month here at UC so I wanted to post a list of important dates you, the Class of 2015, don't want to miss!!

Now that you (the Class of 2015) are official members of the "UC Community", it is time to get involved. Time to get "Locked-In" on March 11th at the Class of 2015 Lock-In! A Gaming Bus, Food, Prizes, Games and a night of getting to know your new classmates ~ we can't wait!

We also want to remind you to reserve your three complimentary tickets to this year's Spring Musical - The Drowsy Chaperone. This one act play is sure to please and entertain, so bring a friend and come enjoy the UC Performing Arts Company!

So much awaits you here at UC...a new academic challenge, new friends and an opportunity to grow in faith and family. New classes, clubs and sports...so many new opportunities! So my recommendation is "jump in" come to everything, be a part of it all right from the start! We can hardly wait for you to get here!

Happy New Year ~
It is hard to believe that the school year is half over, Christmas has come and gone and we are now into 2011!

With the new year comes the excitment of the final stages of the Class of 2015 application review, scholarship exams and admission decision letters!!

With so many students applying from different areas and so many high schools having different requirements, I thought I would take this blog to make sure all applying families have the most up-to-date information.

Important Deadlines:
Class of 2015 applications and records were due in the Admissions office by December 15th.

The Class of 2015 Scholarship Exam has been postponed from January 8th at 9 AM to January 9th at 1:00 pm due to inclement weather. Walk-ins welcome. Students should arrive by 12:30 pm with two#2 pencils. Drop off and pick-up is through the main entrance (front of building). There is a $25 fee for this exam, which may be paid with cash or check. Scholarship awards will be announced in the Admission Decision package.

Endowed Scholarship Applications and recommendation forms are due by January 15th. Please see the UC website for more information www.unioncatholic.org/admissions

Financial Aid Applications are due by January 31st.

Admission Decision letters will be mailed on January 20th.

Having spent so much time reading through all the applications and information makes me anxious to meet you all in person and I look forward to doing that at the Accepted Students Dance and Q&A Sunday (more information on these events to follow).

Blue Shirt Tuesday

So you may ask, what is Blue Shirt Tuesday??? Let me tell you how it started....

One Tuesday morning Mr. Luciano and I were standing in the Main Lobby waiting to greet our "Freshmen for a Day" visitors when a group of junior boys walked by all wearing blue dress shirts. Now the Union Catholic dress code school uniform allows the boys to wear any solid color dress shirt and tie, but it is very unusual to see a whole hallway of them all wearing blue on the same day. With a little investigation I quickly learned that these Junior boys decided that Tuesdays would be "Blue Shirt Days". Well before long I was getting reminder e-mails to wear Blue on Tuesdays. How quickly it became the "thing to do"...to show pride for your UC colors...wear blue on Tuesdays. Yes, Union Catholic students are proud of their school colors! So Class of 2014, when you are shopping for your school uniforms remember at least one (1) blue shirt!!

The Class of 2014 Mandatory Parent Meeting is scheduled for March 9th at 7:00 pm.

The Class of 2014 Lock-In is a week from Friday...March 12th so don't forget to RSVP to dluciano@unioncatholic.org.

The Union Catholic Performing Arts Company will be putting on Les Miserables the weekends of March 19th and March 26th ~ don't forget to reserve your three complimentary tickets.

Well this was a Registration to remember! Even the snow could not keep our families away! I think it is sign of the the determination and drive this class has. I know it is going to be a great four years...welcome to the UC Family.

Now that the Class of 2014 is registered, we have a lot of events coming up that I want to keep you updated on:

PLACEMENT TEST>
The Class of 2014 Placement Test is scheduled for Saturday, February 20, 2010. If you have any questions on whether or not you need to take the placement test, please feel free to call the admissions office or e-mail me at bthornton@unioncatholic.org

CLASS OF 2014 PARENT MEETING
Make sure to mark your calendars to attend the Mandatory Class of 2014 Parent Meeting on March 9th at 7 PM in the UC Cafeteria!!

LOCK-IN
The Class of 2014 Lock-In is scheduled for March 12th at 7PM. If you think the dance was fun...wait till you get to the LOCK-IN. Well the time is upon us! Open Houses, Discovery Days, Q&A Sundays, Freshman For a Day and the Accepted Students Dance are complete ~ it is now time to join the "UC Community". Here at Union Catholic you can feel the buzz in the air...the Class of 2014 is almost here. Who will they be? How will they impact the UC Family? Scholarship Opportunities

Scholarship Exam - January 9, 2010 9AM
Union Catholic will be hosting the Class of 2014 Scholarship Exam on Saturday, January 9th at 9:00 am. Students interested in taking the Union Catholic Scholarship Exam may contact Betsy Thornton at bthornton@unioncatholic.org. Over the last several years, Union Catholic has awarded over $150,000 in academic scholarships based on the results of this exam.

Eighth grade students taking the exam should arrive by 8:45 am and bring two #2 pencils. No calculators are permitted. The exam will be over by 12:30 pm. Students may be dropped off and pick-up up by the front entrance. The cost of the exam is $25 and may be paid the morning of the exam. In the event of inclement weather, please call 908.889.1600 and listen to the recording.

Merit Scholarships
Merit Scholarships are awarded to incoming 8th grade students with outstanding performance on the COOP exam and excellent academic history.

Principal Awards
Any incoming registered freshman student who finishes their 8th grade year as valedictorian or salutatorian is eligible to receive the Principal Award:
- Valedictorian Award - $8,000 award ($2,000 per year; renewable for four years)
- Salutatorian Award - $4,000 award ($1,000 per year; renewable for four years)

Endowed Scholarship Program (NEW)
Union Catholic is pleased to introduce the Endowed Scholarship Program for incoming students, beginning with the 2010-2011 academic school year.

The Endowed Scholarship Program recognizes applicants' commitments to extra-curricular activities, community service and ministry, demonstrated leadership abilities, and strength of character. Candidates for these scholarships must also be in good standing in both academics and behavior.

Endowed Scholarships will be awarded in the following areas:
- Fine & Performing Arts
- Ministry in Faith Community
- Forensics/Public Speaking
- Community Service
- Leadership
- Character (demonstrates honesty, courage, integrity)

Financial Aid
To receive financial assistance, families must follow a two-step process. Parents must first complete and mail the Scholarship fund for Inner City Children Financial Aid Application and then submit the Union Catholic Aid Application. The deadline for applying for financial aid is January 15, 2010. Forms may be found at m.unioncatholic.org/financialaid. Questions regarding financial aid may be directed to Mrs. Hoffman mhoffman@unioncatholic.org.

COOP/Discovery Night

Entrance Exam
Union Catholic was happy to host close to 300 8th graders taking the High School Entrance Exam (COOP) on Friday, November 6th. Students who missed the COOP for any reason may visit www.coopexam.org for instructions on taking the make-up exam on Saturday, November 14th.

Any student who is unable to take the COOP Exam, but is interested in applying to Union Catholic High School, should plan on registering for the Union Catholic Scholarship Exam on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at 9:00 am. Discover UC Night - November 17th 7:00 PM
Union Catholic held Open House on October 8th to a standing room only crowd. If you were unable to attend the Open House, or would like to come back for a second look, then we invite you to attend the Discover UC Night on November 17th at 7PM. True Blue Thursdays

Discover UC Days

Union Catholic's Open House was "standing room only". Our building was buzzing with excitement as prospective families took tours, attended academic presentations and talked with coaches and club moderators as well as our UC students.

If you missed Open House, or would just like a second look at UC, then plan on attending one of Union Catholic's "Discovery Days", Sunday, November 1 12:00 noon - 2:00 pm (remember that we turn the clocks back this weekend!) and Tuesday November 17th at 7 PM.

At these Discover UC Events you'll learn about our nationally recognized Laptop Learning and Virtual High School program and you'll tour our new, state-of-the-art outdoor sports facility with an all-weather turf field. You will Discover why so many UC students enjoy success after high school - 98% of UC students attend college immediately following graduation.

Can you believe we are at the start of a whole new school year already?? Hard to believe, yet here we are.

For the 2009-2010 school year the Admissions Office is going to keep you "in the know" through this blog. It will be updated weekly to give you pertinent dates and information about UC Events.

As September kicks off the Admissions is already in full swing visiting grammar schools, attending high school nights and making plans for the October 8th Open House. We don't want you to miss a thing so we are posting a "must do" list for all prospective 8th grade students:

September- Register for the High School Entrance Exam (COOP). You may do this through your catholic grammar school or by visiting www.coopexam.org. Make sure you list UC as one of the choices to receive your scores. Our school code is 835

October 8th - Attend the Fall Open House. This is a great time to pick up the new Union Catholic Viewbook and UC Application as well as an opportunity to meet our students, teachers and coaches!

October through May - Schedule your Freshman For A Day Visit. Come see for yourself all that UC has to offer!

December - Make sure that your application as well as your 6th 7th & first marking period of 8th grade grades are submitted to our office.

January 9th - Take the Union Catholic Scholarship Exam.

If you follow this timeline, hopefully on January 22, 2010 we will be mailing you your invitation to join the UC Community in the Class of 2014.

UC Winter Highlights!

Well, it certainly HAS been awhile since my last blog. Perhaps thats due to all the MANY wonderful events happening daily around UC. I'm going to try to highlight a few of the many events that we have enjoyed hosting as we said goodbye to 2008, and welcomed 2009 with lots of fresh new Viking faces!

December-UC hosted its first annual "Discover UC Day." This was an opportunity for parents to come and see what a day at UC is all about. This was a GREAT opportunity to get an "inside" look at our various academic learning levels, over 40 club/ activity offerings and even get a sneak peak at a performance from two of our Award-winning Forensics students. In addition, Christmas time at UC is unlike any other. The spirit and decor fill the hallways abundantly! From toy drives sponosored by our UC Angels & Key Club to creating Christmas cards for elderly patients at Cornell Hall, UC always keeps the true spirit of the season first in mind. One of the annual events, our Tree of Lights and Christmas Concert, welcomed many members of the UC family-past and present- to remember, honor and celebrate the lives of those who have gone before us. To honor their constant presence in our hearts, doves were placed on our main foyer tree with the names of all individuals to be remembered. The ceremony was followed by the Christmas concert full of performances from our Concert Choir, Band and Gospel Choir. Since this is a season of celebrating, UC students also danced the night away at their Christmas Semi Formal (pictured left).

January-With the new year upon us, full of resolutions and new promises, UC continued its service to those who in the community who need them most. This year's theme for Catholic School's Week celebrated "Service." As one of the service activites, students participated in a "Soup Bowl"-in which in exchange for a can of soup, students could wear their favorite sports' team's jersey or t-shirt. (pictured right)

At a time of new beginnings, we also were introduced to our potential "Class of 2013." Upon the completetion of our Scholarship Exam, we offered many scholarships and hosted a dinner in the recipients' honor. With the help of UC's resident deejay, DJ Inferno Entertainment, the Accepted Students for the Class of 2013 danced the night away (right)!

February- UC proudly welcomed its newest Vikings- the Class of 2013! Parents, students and friends all came out on February 7th to celebrate the excitement and accomplishment of this very day!

March-On March 13th, the Admissions Office hosted its annual LOCK-In for the Class of 2013! Over 115 of our accepted students attended the event that was led by our team of Ambassadors and Big Brothers and Sisters. The Class of 2013 participated in various events to enhance their familiarity with one another. Students were divided into random groups after selecting a candy bar from the sign-in table. After receiving their “Viking tattoo” , teams such as “Kit Kat”, “Mounds” and “Peppermint Patties”, participated in various relationship-building events. Some events included UC bingo, musical chairs, UC trivia, poster contest, kickball and knock-out. We also invited the traveling video game bus from our Earn N Burn fundraiser to act as a stationed activity-and most popular one! One of the favorite parts of the evening was the “build your own Ice cream sundae” bar –complete with many toppings!! This event is so popular at UC that two alums, Aaron Doherty ’08 and Corinne Timko ’07 chose to spend an evening of their spring break helping out!

The UCPAC also took the UC Community "Into the Woods" with a musical twist on three famous fairy tales. Many of fellow grammar schools were able to come out for a special performance of the show EXCLUSIVELY for them!

Which brings us to today! Another friendly reminder of just how FANTASTIC "Into the Woods" REALLY is! I invite you to come and see the show in its final weekend (April 3rd & 4th at 8pm!) We look forward to a fu nand exciting Spring around UC! There's so much fun to be had-So Come be a part of it!! =)

New Discover UC Video

Thanks to one of alums, Jessica Vogt '04, UC now has a full length dvd depicting the life and times of our school community! If you haven't seen it yet, feel free to stop by the Admissions or Development Office for a viewing! The video is approximately 8 minutes long and shows everything "beautiful" about UC....our students..our faith...our clubs...our high level of academics..our sports and most importantly, our spirit. It was debuted at our "Discover UC Night" on November 6th and we received nothing but RAVE reviews! Thanks too all faculty, administration, alums, and students for giving the outside community a true a sense that UC really is "Something Beautiful!"

Days of Recollection

On Tuesday, Sept. 23rd, we welcomed over 160 eighth graders from various Catholic grammar schools in our area. The schools who attended our first session included: Sacred Heart, North Plainfield; St. John Vienny, Colonia; St. Joes, Maplewood, St. Michael's, Union; & St. James, Springfield. With the help of our "Big Brother/ Big Sisters" (pictured below), we conducted a whole day of activities and small group discussions which allowed us all to pause and take a moment to reflect on just how much God impacts all of our lives. Each of the 8th graders were asked to select a word that describes them. Through various fun activities, we showed just HOW different each of those qualities became in each one of them. For example: Many of the students had described themselves as being "loud." Yet, when put to the test of Mr. Luciano to be AS LOUD as they can be into a microphone, we DEFINITELY were able to see the uniqueness of each student. The UC students talked about four key reflection topics: Friends, Self-Acceptance, Decision Making, & Faith, all of which are key points for the average high school student to ponder. All four of the students who spoke shared personal experiences about one of those aspects of their lives. The highlight of the day, however, probably came as the students enjoyed lunch from Wendys! The day concluded with a question and answer session for our UC student ambassadors. The Big brothers and sisters did such a great job, as always. They love whenever they can interact with potential students because they too know exactly how they feel.

Here is a picture, left, of our second day of recollection on Thursday, 9/25. Our attending schools this day included Our Lady of Peace; Hillside Catholic Academy, Holy Trinity, St. Genevieve's, Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Academy. This annual event is such a wonderful time for us to get to know our potential "future vikings" as well as for the grammar school students to take some time to reflect on many important aspects of their lives.

The New Kid on the 'Blog'. . .

Okay, i couldn't help myself with that title, considering I'll be attending the one of the FIRST NKOTB (New Kids on the Block) concerts in over TEN years on 9/23! Anyways, just wanted to send an opening blog and a general "HELLO!" to everyone out there checking out our UC Blogging Community! I'm so happy to be apart of Union Catholic for many reasons. There's so much that UC has to offer. How do I know that after only being here 3 weeks? As a student of Catholic education for 14 years, I find myself quite familiar and at home with everything here at UC. . .which is exactly what the school community here is all about. A school community cannot fully reach its potential without the ideas, qualities, characteristics, and involvement of its members: the students, faculty, administration, families, friends, & staff. Each and every one of us are unique, just as God has always reminded us. We are encouraged to share our talents with others and get involved! Like a puzzle, it cannot be complete without all of its pieces; and that is a puzzle that is constantly changing. As one senior class leaves us each year, we anticipate the arrivial of fresh new "pieces" to add to our puzzle! The key to getting the most out of any HS experience is by getting involved....any way you can! You could join one of over 30 clubs, 3 athletic seasons with over 30 different teams, or join the ONE group that is ALWAYS in season, the highly popular "BLUE CREW!" Show your Viking pride by cheering on your fellow classmates for a successful season! Well, thats all for now. . . SUMMER SPORTS

Yesterday I was pulling into the UC parking lot and I was amazed to see that there were no open parking spots. One would think that a school would be quiet in the summer ~ well not here at UC. On a Tuesday evening in July there were soccer games, volleyball camps, basketball players meeting to go to a tournament, baseball players returning from their game and a group of cross country teammates meeting for a run. So since this is the UC Informational blog, I thought I’d post the information that our athletic director has on his edgate page. Feel free to check any of the coaches schoolnotes pages for individual sport information.

For a posting of starting dates and times for Fall Sports Teams log onto the schools homepage (www.unioncatholic.org) then click "Athletics" and then click "highschoolsports.com". Now select the state (New Jersey) and school (Union Catholic Reg. High School). You will find a listing of all athletic activities by month (be sure you have selected the 2008-2009 school year located in the upper left hand corner).

Class of 2012 BBQ

It is hard to believe that Memorial Day has come and gone and we are now heading toward the end of the school year.

As the Class of 2012's last days in 8th grade approach, I wanted to remind you of a few things...

The Class of 2012 BBQ is being held on THURSDAY JUNE 19TH 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM. Don't forget to RSVP to bthornton@unioncatholic.org. Drop-off and pick-up are at the main entrance and remember to wear comfortable clothes. The UC Big Brothers and Sisters are busy planning a fun afternoon, so don't miss out!

Emerging Leaders Program - incoming freshmen who are interested in applying to the Emerging Leaders program are reminded that applications are due in the Admissions Office by July 1st. For additional information visit www.unioncatholic.org/admissions.

Big Brother/Big Sister - You will be hearing from your big brother or big sister over the summer, feel free to ask them any questions or concerns you may have about the start of school. They are there to help!

Class of 2012 First Day of School - Your first day of school will be Thursday, September 6th, the Freshmen Orientation Day. Your big brother/big sister will be here that day to help you with your schedule. Buses will be running on Orientation Day and students will need to be in full uniform. More information on the start of school will come home in the mail and will be posted in this blogspot over the summer.

Summer Reading List - The Class of 2012 summer reading list is being mailed home on May 30th and will be available on-line after June 15th.

Quarters For Cancer/Mr. UC

Mark your calendars ~ Come to UC for Dinner and a Show on Wednesday April 16th ~ Quarters for Cancer and the Mr. UC Contest!

The Union Catholic Student Movement Against Cancer (SMAC) will be hosting a Quarters for Cancer Dinner in the cafeteria. All monies raised will help support the Relay for Life in May. Our students have been busy planning this special evening and the menu sounds wonderful ~ all are welcome - doors will open at 5PM and close at 7:30 pm.

After you have finished dinner and dessert, you can stroll down the hall to the auditorium for the Mr. UC Contest. Doors for Mr. UC will open at 6:30 with the opening number beginning at 7PM.
Union Catholic's Student Council Executive Board promises a very entertaining night! Who will be the new MR. UC? You'll have to come to find out!

New Lock-In Date ~ April 18th

At UC we have a saying ~ "no sense making a plan unless you are going to change it!"
Each year we plan the UC Lock-In in early March. Due to Easter being so early this year we needed to use the date of February 29th ~ "Leap Year". We were excited thinking of all kinds of themes we could use like "Class of 2012 Leaps into High School". Well, it was not to be! For the first time in the lock-in's history, it snowed and we needed to postpone our date.

New Lock-In date is: April 18th - 7PM - 11PM

This is one of our favorite events of the year. It is the first time our new freshman class comes together and we were so disappointed that we needed to postpone ~ that was until so many of our senior big brothers and sisters came to us and let us know that now they would be available to help. You see, the first date was also the weekend of the senior retreat and our seniors could not be part of the lock-in on the 29th ~ but now they can. Guess it was all part of the plan all along!

RIAA trial verdict affects your children and you.

To all who download music and your Parents,

If you haven't followed the news lately a very important verdict has been reached by 12 jurors. The jurors found Jammie Thomas guilty of copyright infringement through her illegal actions of downloading music. They fined Ms. Thomas $9,250 per illegal song on her harddrive. Resulting in a fine of $220,000 for 24 illegal songs.

This plus the other 20,000 cases that are either currently being negotiated or are already completed in the United States should warn us about the importance of teaching our children that we are responsible for our behavior on the Internet.

Some programs your children may be using to download music illegally (if they are on their computer that is what they're using it for) are: Bearshare, Limewire, Morpheus, and Ares.
